Right Decisions, Right Now: Be Tobacco Free is an educational program designed to prevent young people from using tobacco in any form, including cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. It is specifically designed to help educators, parents and guardians talk to children in grades 5 through 9, about not using tobacco products. The Be Tobacco Free materials were created by Lifetime Learning Systems, Inc., and funded by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
Model for Success
Educators, parents and others who are most influential in the lives of children and youth should talk to them about tobacco prevention, the health consequences of tobacco use, the factors that contribute to experimenting with and using tobacco products, and ways to avoid use. Right Decisions, Right Now: Be Tobacco Free provides a well-researched, systematic way to have that important dialogue. With your guidance and support and the lessons in this program, your students will be better informed and empowered to be tobacco free.
The Right Decisions, Right Now: Be Tobacco Free evidence-based program materials have been formally tested in a randomized control trial of middle and junior high schools with students in grades 5 through 9. Based on initial test results, the materials were found to have a statistically significant impact on students exposed to the lessons. Furthermore, it found that those students who participated in Right Decisions, Right Now: Be Tobacco Free were less likely to experiment with and/or think about using tobacco products 30 days post program exposure.
In early 2007, the materials and research outcomes were submitted to NREP (National Registry of Evidence-based Programs), a program of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for review. The Right Decisions, Right Now: Be Tobacco Free youth tobacco prevention program has been approved for review.
